In the 70's, a Danish filmmaker (and Quaker), named Jan De Hartog, who has since passed away, travelled to England and the U.S. to film a television series charting the birth and movement of The Religious Society of Friends. At the time he shot every segment at least twice, once in English and once in Danish. The Danish footage was aired in Denmark as a television series, but nothing was ever produced with the English footage.
Not many films exist on the subject, so I was hired by a Friend, Chuck Fager, to try and piece together what I could from around 14 hours of 16mm film plus separate magnetic audio rolls, to create some sort of History of Quakerism document. This was as far as I was able to get with the project with the resources that were available, so clearly there are large sections missing and some Quakers have questions about the validity of some of his facts, so there's some controversy too. But his clear passion for the subject is entertaining to watch and it is at least a glimpse into a fascinating history of a religious movement which had a significant influence on America's founding, yet has been largely untold.
I used the facilities at lift.on.ca in Toronto to transfer the material. I was unable to work with the negatives, so what I used were in fact the "scratch prints", hence the rough look of some of the footage.
