Looking for leadership? Ask yourselves, what can we do to further a worthy movement?

Electric sportscar driven from Alaska to Argentina and electric vehicles in Houston. Maplecroft’s top “extreme risk” nations. Wind power and bat conservation.
We’re all in this leaky canoe together, and we just elected a bunch that denies the canoe is leaking, and these climate change deniers are scrambling for key positions in the House. Meanwhile south Florida is threatened by rising waters and coral around the world suffered a “major, major” die off. Rising levels of CO2 in ocean water threatened the dominant coral of the Caribbean, elkhorn coral. Ohio State University researchers found that lies about Muslims are more likely to believed by listeners of Fox and right-wing talk radio. Faithful America (faithfulamerica.org) launches a campaign to drive-out fear in the media. Right wingers dumb down constitutional scholarship. The Department of Defense should be audited annually to cut waste.
Music worth listening to:

Ecotopia Soon! November 7, 2010

Are we putting the B Team back in because we’re so far behind Germany, China, and India in the race to a sustainable future? You’ll hear a lot about the proximate causes of the election results and little about the ultimate causes: Citizens United ruling allowed millions to be spent secretly and Fox News pushes the Tea Party resulting in a misinformed, confused electorate, voting for the interests of the billionaires. Over $455,000,000 spent on this election with over half from sources that no longer need to be made public. Plus other environmental and civil news.
Music:
Oscar Peterson Trio: It Ain’t Necessarily So from Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin
King Pleasure: Sometimes I’m Happy from King Pleasure Sings
Flight of the Conchords: I’m Not Crying from The Distant Future
Dinah Washington: Smoke Gets in Your Eyes from Dinah Washington Compact Jazz
The Four Tops: A Simple Game from The Ultimate Collection
John Prine: Pretty Good from John Prine
Howlin’ Wolf: Spoonful from The Best of Howlin’ Wolf
The O’Jays: Love Train from Back Stabbers

Ecotopia Soon! October 24, 2010

Ecotopia Soon! returns after a ten week break. I lost my endowed-professorship in environmental problem solving at Northland College and moved to Menomonie, Wisconsin to teach Biology at University of Wisconsin-Stout. There is no community radio station in Menomonie. But through the kindness of strangers and Friends, I am able to continue producing the show. I am hoping that the show will be aired on WRNC-LP and other stations. Meanwhile, here is the first show from rural Menomonie, Wisconsin. Please send you comments and suggests - or, if you' like to have Ecotopia Soon! on your radio station - please email me at ecotopia@wrnclp.org.
The biggest story of the 2010 elections that few people hear about; how the vast disparity between the rich and the rest of us is slowing the economic recovery; the egg industry, too big to fail or to care?; The National Rifle Association and the Tea Party, all rights and freedom, but no responsibility; and finally, music is innate and part of our evolutionary inheritance.
Music list:
Oscar Peterson Trio: It Ain't Necessarily So from Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin (1952)
Cannonball Adderly: Autumn Leaves from Somethin Else (1958, with Miles Davis, Hank Jones, Same Jones, and Art Blakey)
The Beatles: I Want to Tell You from Revolver (1966)
Sly & the Family Stone: Color Me True from Dance to the Music (1968)
Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson: Lookin' for a Feelin' from Waylon & Willie (1978)
Angelique Kidjo: Olofoofo from Black Ivory Soul (2002)
Screamin' Jay Hawkins: I Put a Spell on You from The Famous Video Cast [YouTube] (Year unknown)

Ecotopia Soon! October 31, 2010

Remember to vote. Political leaders give up on major climate legislation; others promise gridlock. Randal Paul campaign worker wants apology from woman for making him stomp on her head. Candidates avoid talking climate change, energy policy, and green jobs. New poll shows that voters really care about climate change, energy policy, and green jobs. Olympia, Washington plans sea wall to protect city from rising ocean. Large solar projects announced for South Africa and the United States. German battery car sets distance record. Tea-Party-backed Republican candidates attack states' Renewable Portfolio Standards. Fossil-fuel billionaire and Tea Party secret-funder William Koch funds opponents to the Cape Wind wind power project. Rio Negro, a large tributary to the Amazon, has dried since August and is “the face of climate change.” And more environmental news. Vote, because it really does matter that we elect people who understand environmental change. And, please, I’ll try not to make you stomp on my head.

Mark Leach reports on the Ecological Society of America’s annual meeting and yacking at truck stops and coffee shops between Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and Ashland, Wisconsin. Technical snafus resulted in the loss of the final third of this broadcast. Concerning the future of Turkey, Mark Leach regrets saying “inhabitable” when he meant to say “uninhabitable.”
Music:
Oscar Peterson Trio: It Ain’t Necessarily So from Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin
Nat King Cole Trio: Frim Fram Sauce from The Best Of Nat King Cole Trio: The Vocal Classics, Vol. 1 (1942-1946)
Mose Allison: Stop the World from Swingin’ Machine
Delbert McClintock: Take It Easy from The Ultimate Collection
Greatful Dead: New Speedway Boogie from Workingman’s Dead

How do we immunize ourselves from all the fruh-ha of the fast talkers? Here are some views and clues you might choose to use: Occam’s razor (compare the speaker’s overly complex assumptions with your own simple ones); instead of answering misleading questions, ask the speaker about the important problems; if it’s not about more positive relations among people and more positive relations with nature, than maybe it’s not worth listening to. Plus more fossil fuel and clean energy news, unions, Asian carp, solar aircraft, and more.

Dependence, Independence, and Interdependence Day Weekend. In 1776 there was one King George. How many do we face today? Citigroup strategists coin “plutonomism,” the rich deserve to get richer. Plutonomist Steve Forbs calls the proposed Public Safety Employer-Employee Cooperation Act the “Police and Firefighter Monopoly Bargaining Bill.” Criticizing religions while supporting their free practice. News from the “Well Regulated Militia”(c): Supreme Court cuts down Chicago hand-gun ban. Chicago immediately passes new strict hand-gun ordinance. When will the Senate pass carbon limits? More fracting trouble in the Marcellus Shale. North Pacific right whales almost extinct. Bees monitor toxins at German airports. And more.
